Nyanabasa: A Woman, a Man, and a Stereotype

On Monday, July 24, 2023, MudHut will showcase NyanaBasa, a captivating tale of three siblings delving into the stereotypes ingrained across the three historical periods of Ghana.

Prepare to be captivated by an extraordinary performance unlike any other! Experience the magic of this mesmerizing play at the Mawere Opoku Dance Hall located at the prestigious University of Ghana, Legon.

The plot centres on three siblings and the prejudices associated with their gender. The sister desires to defy societal norms and aims to become a King by taking on her brother’s identity.

The eldest brother is taken captive and traded as a slave in unfamiliar territory. On the other hand, the youngest brother, who is destined to rule, has no ambition for leadership and finds comfort in his artistic pursuits and voyages.

In Nyanabasa, the songs are not just musical breaks but an essential part of the storytelling. They are inspired by the beautiful folk traditions of Ghana and blend with the nonverbal movements and visuals to provide a layered experience for the audience. The para language used in the songs adds complexity and subtlety to the story and helps evoke different emotions, connecting viewers to the authentic essence of the performance.

The play experiments with a new genre by Kobina Hagan called nonverbal storytelling. He stated, “Where words fail, movement speaks. “This is a mesmerizing journey of nonverbal storytelling where we present Nyanabasa, an abstract theatrical production that challenges conventions and explores the power of embodied communication.”
