Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a memorial site dedicated to Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is located in Accra, Ghana. It was built on the former British colonial Polo Grounds, where Dr Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence famously.

The Polo Grounds was developed into Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in 1990 under the former Head of State, Jerry John Rawlings, in honour of Ghana’s first President and to preserve the nation’s heritage. The park was opened to the public in 1992.

It underwent renovation in 2022 and reopened to the public on July 4th, 2023. It has since been one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country.

This is how the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park looks now, with new facilities such as a Presidential Library, an amphitheatre, a restaurant, a Freedom Hall, an audio-visual tunnel, and a gift shop.
