The UNDP African Young Women Leaders (AfYWL) Fellowship Programme invites young African women to participate in a 12-month fellowship program at its headquarters in New York or its conflict-free regional offices.
The African Young Women Leaders Fellowship Programme is a partnership between the African Union Commission (AUC) and UNDP. The Programme seeks to build a new generation of young African women leaders and experts to serve Africa and the world in designing and implementing development programmes in the context of the SDGs and Africa’s Agenda 2063.
Established in 2019, the African Young Women Leaders (AfYWL) Fellowship Programme seeks to cultivate a new generation of young African women leaders to serve Africa and the world by designing and implementing development programmes in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s Agenda 2063.
The Fellowship Programme, a joint initiative between the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to advance gender equality by investing in global women’s leadership.
The Programme deploys fellows to UNDP country, regional and headquarters offices to undertake 1-year assignments. The first AfYWL cohort (2019-2021) consisted of 21 fellows selected from 20 African countries and deployed to 20 UNDP offices globally.
The Programme is in its second phase (2022-2023), with 38 fellows from 22 African countries deployed to 26 locations at UNDP offices in Africa, Asia, Europe and the USA.
Programme Benefits
The Fellowship program will cover the fellow’s travel and medical insurance expenses.
Individuals will be given a monthly allowance to cover their housing and essential living costs at their designated work site.
Moreover, they will be granted paid time off and a budget intended explicitly for learning. This can be utilized to engage in relevant developmental activities and enhance one’s skills and knowledge.
Eligibility Criteria
Must be a woman.
Individuals must be younger than 30 to meet the age requirement.
To be classified as an African national.
Must hold a master’s degree.
You must be ready for a 12-month deployment outside of your home country.
