Ghana and Malawi established diplomatic relations in 1964, shortly after Malawi gained independence. These relations were rooted in the deep historical ties between Dr Kwame Nkrumah and Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda and their shared vision for an independent Africa.
The Malawian President, Lazarus Chakwera, visited Ghana in June 2023 to attend the 30th Annual Meeting of Afrexim Bank. His visit reignited the bilateral relations between Ghana and Malawi, paving the way for a shared future.
In February 2024, the Malawi government removed the requirement for entry visas for at least 79 nationalities (including Ghana) to boost the country’s burgeoning tourist industry.
Ghana and Malawi’s bilateral relations are not merely symbolic. They represent a commitment to African unity and illustrate the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration released a statement on 21 March to inform Ghanaians about the visa waiver agreement between Ghana and Malawi.
